History Of Godiva

The company was founded by a Joseph Draps in 1926 in the city of Brussels, Belgium. The logo, also chosen by Joseph Draps, is an image of Lady Godiva, a legendary character who rode throughout the city of Coventry (UK) completely naked, on horseback. It is said she did this to try and lower taxes set by her husband on the town’s people. The very first shop opened in the Grand Place in Brussels under its present name, in honor of the legendary Lady Godiva. The first shop outside of Belgium was opened in Paris in 1958 on Rue St. Honore. The shops rapidly expanded as the demand for this exquisite chocolate grew. Today Godiva operates in over 80 different countries with more than 450 shops worldwide.

A Little More About Godiva Chocolate

In December 2007, Campbell, the currant owner of Godiva announced the company was going to be sold to Turkey-based Yildiz Holding, the biscuit and chocolate group. The deal was finalized and sold on March 18, 2008 for a staggering $850 million. The company still operates their original shops today, but they also distribute mail order catalogs across the USA, accept online purchases, and  telephone orders for all of their products.
